  The Wild Party at Source

The Wild Party

Source
1835 14th Street, NW Washington

An acclaimed off-Broadway hit, The Wild Party captures all the verve and violence of the Jazz Age as it tells the '20s-era story of volatile vaudeville lovers Queenie and Burrs, hosts of the titular bash. But as their friends start to tumble in and the booze flows freely, inhibitions lower, jealousies flare, and the decadent evening turns increasingly dark and deadly. Written by Tony nominee Andrew Lippa (The Addams Family), this bold and provocative musical comes to the stage at DC's Source via a new production by the Constellation Theatre Company.

Washington Post - Recommended

'...“The Wild Party” is not a blithe, fun musical: Its characters are starkly pinned between seedy dissolution and desperate boredom, which can be an aggravating place. Still, this well-thought-out production is spirited and flavorful enough to reward an RSVP."

"...The band is blowing, the hooch is flowing, and the guests are lit. But Constellation Theatre’s new production of The Wild Party doesn’t lift off to the heights it should, in order to fully convey the dizzying descent and devastating impact when the party comes crashing down.'

"...Queenie and Burrs are the story of a once steamy love gone stale. Andrew Lippa's The Wild Party tells their story as they lash out in manipulation and jealousy. Directed by Allison Arkell Stockman, The Constellation Theatre's production opened on September 21. Told against the backdrop of a seedy New York City apartment in the 1920's, this musical is good dirty fun. As all musical theatre fans know, nothing is sexier than the sound of a muted trumpet in low lighting."

"...Constellation Theatre Company opened Lippa’s The Wild Party on Monday and their production more than lives up to the title. Director Allison Arkell Stockman has put together a cast that is stacked with talent. And a live band performs the Jazz Age styled score, with Walter “Bobby” McCoy conducting. McCoy also served as Musical Director for the production, with superb sound design by Justin Schmitz. Put all of that together and you get two and a half hours of high-energy, jaw-dropping performances that blow the roof right off the joint."

"...Though thin on plot and weak on character development, the Constellation Theatre Company production of Andrew Lippa’s 2000 musical “The Wild Party” still manages to impress due to a strong cast and stylish direction by Allison Arkell Stockman."
