Hooded, Or Being Black for Dummies at Atlas Performing Arts Center

Hooded, Or Being Black for Dummies

Atlas Performing Arts Center
1333 H Street NE Washington

Tearrance Arvelle Chisholm's "breathtakingly on-point" (Washington Post) comedy Hooded, Or Being Black for Dummies returns for a special encore remount after its sold-out run became one of the first breakout D.C. hits of 2017. This irreverent examination of growing up Black in America features two unlikely allies -- Marquis and Tru. Suspecting that Marquis has lost his "blackness," Tru pens a manual entitled "Being Black for Dummies," which sends the two on a whirlwind journey through a world of cheerleaders, 2Pac, Nietzsche, Apollo and Dionysus. This searing satire is back to challenge notions, break boundaries and leave you questioning your own perceptions of race. Catch Hooded at the Atlas Performing Arts Center's Sprenger Theatre.

"...Tearrance Arvelle Chisholm’s “Hooded, or Being Black for Dummies” arrested audiences last season by making a whip-smart comedy around Trayvon Martin’s tragedy. That sounds irreverent, but it’s not: Chisholm writes with fury and indignation while making the show fresh, funny and entirely fearless. It was one of my top picks of the year, and watching Mosaic Theater’s revival with nearly all the original cast intact, I stand by it."

"...HOODED is consistently funny, biting, and insightful. It uses dialogue and visuals designed to provoke a breathless reaction. Does it earn its dramatic, devastating one-two punch of a climax? I encourage you to see it and debate for yourself. After all, you'll want to discuss this piece and its unspooling of ideas about race in detail afterwards."

"...Mosaic Theater Company has an amazing production. The world of the story that the cast and creative team present is fully imagined and engaging. The show deserves every accolade it has earned."

"...In Hooded, the spectacle comes from every sensory angle. Ethan Sinnott's kaleidoscopic shipping container set morphs with jaw-dropping agility to portray homes, school, a pizza shop, and mythic dreamscapes. David Lamont Wilson's laugh tracks alternating with poetry by Tupac and "Lux Aeterna" by Clint Mansell fling the audience from awareness of the Atlas Performing Arts Center, to a fictional, whitewashed neighborhood called Achievement Heights, to Baltimore, to the ancient Grecian cosmos."
