An Irish Carol at Keegan Theatre

An Irish Carol

Keegan Theatre
1742 Church Street, NW Washington

Dubbed both "sweet and cheerfully profane" by The Washington Post, An Irish Carol returns to the Keegan Theatre for its much-anticipated annual holiday visit. Written by Emerald Isle native and Keegan company member Matthew J. Keenan, the play follows one evening in the life of David, a wealthy Dublin pub owner who's lost touch with his own humanity in the interest of self-protection and material success. But this Christmas Eve, David's life may change forever when he's challenged by a voice from the past, provoked by those in the present and faced with the reality of a lonely future. A modern fable told with all the biting humor and incisive candor of its Irish playwright, this gritty twist on Dickens' classic has played to sold-out audiences for five straight years now, becoming its own DC tradition.

"...You haven't heard "God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman" until you've heard it performed with a lively Celtic flair, ending with two multi-talented women laying aside their instruments to step dance their way to the end of the song."

"...An Irish Carol, on the whole, is a great success. The cast works together with a magnificent chemistry and the performances are poignant and inspired. The Keegan Theatre's production of An Irish Carol is an original take on an old holiday favorite, and an excellent addition to anyone's list of traditions this time of year. The play successfully carries Dickens' intended allegory of valuing what is most important in life, which are people and relationships, as opposed to money or property, which is a beautiful lesson to take away from what has been a difficult year for so many."

"...Kevin Adams' performance is the centerpiece of this production. Gruff and cynical, he expresses David's coiled aggression by stalking around the set, waggling his head like a bull during his short tirades. He chews on dialogue in a grumpy baritone, imbuing one-word answers with snide meaning. But just like Scrooge, the outsize nature of his crotchetiness makes him more endearing; he's a mean one, but a fun one to watch. When he receives a message from an old friend, Adams' face visually condenses decades of emotional struggle into a few moments. The power and depth of his performance make David's relatively short jump to redemption and happiness a believable one."

"...Lynch, Rhea, and Josh Adams-whose Bartek walks into a couple of funny cultural misunderstandings-provide the right amount of levity to balance all the drama, which Tinder, Hirsh, Dubberly, and Kozemchak heighten during confrontations with Dave. It's a very real cast, grounded by a moody set and lighting that'll have you wanting to spend your Christmas Eve in Ireland."
