Washington Post - Recommended

"...Giggles and groans arise from sections of the audience as the unlikely events of “Passion” unfold, particularly as Fosca makes herself more and more of a nuisance and Giorgio expresses the wish for the umpteenth time that she would just leave him alone. But as his resistance subsides, the musical asks, who are we to pass judgment on how the heart changes? Why would we resist investing in the decision by a handsome man to find happiness with a woman deemed less desirable than he? There’s ample time allotted on this musically satisfying occasion for us to reflect on the societal values that forge life choices, and marvel at the rich diversity of what beguiles each one of us."

BroadwayWorld - Highly Recommended

"...Signature's production celebrates the complexities of love with a production filled with a career-defining performance by leading lady Natascia Diaz and the type of mature, sleek, and sexy direction rarely seen in Washington. Matthew Gardiner, who once again has excelled as a director and interpreter of Sondheim, has given us a production that though filled with elements of macabre, never lets the musical lose its key message: that love, means many things to many people."

"...The entire cast is strong, especially the ensemble work among the soldiers (including Helen Hayes Award honorees Bobby Smith and Lawrence Redmond, along with Gartshore). The production also soars with a full orchestra, conducted by Jon Kalbfleisch, performing Jonathan Tunick's original orchestrations. (The score gains depth with repeated listening, as Sondheim's motifs turn up in unexpected places and sung by unfamiliar characters.)"

"...Signature has a long history of doing Sondheim well, and this production is no exception. Every aspect of the show is beautifully realized, every character is finely delineated, and Sondheim’s rich, romantic score is played and sung to perfection. For any Sondheim fan, it’s a must; for anyone who has not seen Passion before, it can be a revelation."

"...“Passion” is complicated and certainly not one of Sondheim’s most well-known works. However it contains some gorgeous music and the stellar performances and design choices for Signature’s production make it worth seeing."
