"...With the current ire being stoked against America's billionaire class, "Newsies" has a new point of reference for worker resentments in its depiction of us vs. them. Pulitzer, proprietor of the powerful New York World, mercilessly seeks to wring more profit out of the boys (and a few girls), led by Daniel J. Maldonado's vibrant Jack Kelly: He callously raises the cost to them of buying the papers they have to sell. The heartlessness of the rich could not be more manifest than in the Dickensian visage of Crutchie (Joe Montoya), a newsboy with a useless leg, who's beaten by the magnate's thugs and thrown into rat-infested detention."

"...From the moment you enter Arena Stage's Fichandler Stage, an intimate theater-in-the-round where everyone has a seat close to the action, you'll be transported to turn-of-the-19th-century New York, where laundry hangs from every window and street kids called "Newsies" sell newspapers in order to make enough money to eat. It could be a bleak place where child labor and poverty are common and kids are at the mercy of mostly uncaring adults. But instead, Newsies delivers a theater experience that will lift your spirits and remind you of the power of ordinary people to change the world."

"...Since this is Singin' in the Rain, the audience knows that Don is going to dance with his umbrella as the rain falls on him; Cosmo is going to knock himself out with "Make 'em Laugh," using the elements of Donald O'Connor's movie routine that won't incapacitate Tischler during a performance; and the "Broadway Melody" ballet is still the anchor of the second act, scaled down from the (unstageable) film original."

"...Even if, like me, you saw the bright new production of NEWSIES on Broadway in 2012, the Arena Stage setting is instantly memorable. Being emerged in the theater-in-the-round is like the difference between seeing a beloved Disney film on the big screen and walking into the middle of the action in the Disney theme parks. Like many of the shows that take place in the Fichandler theater, set designer Ken MacDonald stretches the performance area from the stage all the way to the back walls. Just walking in to take your seat places you right in New York City among the clotheslines filled with laundry hung out to dry."
