  Matilda at Olney Theatre Center

Matilda

Olney Theatre Center
2001 Olney-Sandy Spring Rd. Olney

From the author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory comes another unlikely hero: Matilda Wormwood. Born to parents who prize their own ignorance and disdain books, learning and any information they can't get from television, Matilda somehow manages to emerge ... a genius. Maybe even a magical one. However, she and the rest of the school are under the tyrannical rule of a deliciously devious villain, principal Agatha Trunchbull. Matilda embraces the fearful and terrifying moments of childhood with humor, hard-earned optimism and astoundingly witty musical numbers. Songs like "Miracle," "Naughty" and "Revolting Children" will ring true to adults and belong in the survival kit of any child making their way through pre-adolescence and beyond. Book by Dennis Kelly. Music & Lyrics by Tim Minchin. Based on the book Matilda by Roald Dahl. Music Directed by Christopher Youstra. Choreography by Byron Easley. Directed by Peter Flynn. Age Guidance: If this were a film it would be rated PG.

Talkin Broadway - Highly Recommended

"...Dunn gives an emotionally true performance and demonstrates a self-possession beyond her years, but she isn't the only star of this production. Story, whose repertoire encompasses Shakespeare, Tom Stoppard, and low comedy, is a fearsome Trunchbull, a grim, humorless athlete of giant stature who can also do a cartwheel. (Story has seven Helen Hayes Award nominations. Now would be a good time to give him the award.)"

"...What, more than anything else, made Matilda a hit in London and on Broadway is that it tells a child's story without sentimentality, giving its protagonist agency amidst the dark forces in her world. Olney Theatre Center's production succeeds for the same reasons, providing a thoroughly satisfying experience for the audience."

"..."Matilda," Roald Dahl's perennially popular children's book, will likely be familiar to most generations of readers and theatergoers. Olney Theatre Center's impressive new staging of "Matilda: The Musical" perfectly captures the beloved story's wit, warmth and whimsy."

"...The kids are really what make Matilda special, and Olney has assembled a roster of adorable ones. The precocious Emiko Dunn is more than up for the demands of the title role, and really gets to show off her vocal chops during "Quiet," when Matilda prepares to reveal that her powers extend beyond reciting time tables and reading Charles Dickens. She's surrounded by other charismatic kids like her best friend Lavender (Ainsley Deegan) and the affable cake thief Bruce (Jack St. Pierre on Thursday night), who rocks the company through the raucous anthem, "Revolting Children." Adults playing older kids help round out the ensemble of schoolchildren."
