Into the Woods

Ford's Theatre
511 Tenth Street, N.W. Washington

In Stephen Sondheim's imaginative, darkly comical remix of beloved fairy tales, a baker and his wife set out to reverse a witch's curse in hopes of having a child of their own. The couple's quest takes them into the woods, where they encounter Little Red Ridinghood, Jack and his beanstalk, a cautious Cinderella, a sequestered Rapunzel and a couple of lovelorn princes. Sondheim's lush Tony-winning score and James Lapine's Tony-winning book conjure a world where "giants can be good and witches can be right."

"...Somebody's hauled a fabulous eight-piece orchestra into the enchanted forest of Ford's new production of Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods, and the brilliant, Tony-winning score, conducted by music director William Yanesh sounds great."

"...Peter Flynn tackles Sondheim's darkly imagined INTO THE WOODS at Ford's Theatre and the result is sensational. Flynn leads an exceptional cast and, with support from Michael Bobbitt's choreography, Milagros Ponce Leon's set design, and Wade Laboissonniere's costume design, has a hit on his hands."

"...Director Peter Flynn has brought together a large, diverse, and talented cast for his sparkling production of Into the Woods at Ford's Theatre in Washington. From Milagros Ponce de Leon's scenic design, which suggests both folk art and the illustrations in children's books, to Michael Bobbitt's imaginative choreography, it's beautiful."

"...I have loved Sondheim's Into the Woods since seeing its original Broadway production. Three decades on, Ford's Theatre's current version carries the tradition forward proudly."

"..."Into the Woods" plays at Ford's Theatre for another two months, but don't wait until the end of the run to see this production. The script and score might be in its early 30s, but a performance as good as this one is timeless."

"..."Into the Woods," the ambitious prologue song, is one of Sondheim's most brilliant and memorable, as it courses over the first extended scene, introducing the main characters and their dilemmas. It surprisingly includes a rap performed by Zampelli ("Rooting through my rutabaga...Raiding my arugula"), years ahead of what Lin-Manuel Miranda would later do. That's followed by the fantastic meeting between Little Red Ridinghood and the Wolf ("Hello, Little Girl") in which Mueller (creeping around on stilts!) thirstily croons "There's no possible describe what you feel...when you're talking to your meal.""
