Illyria, or What Your Will at Gunston Arts Center

Illyria, or What Your Will

Gunston Arts Center
2700 S. Lang Street Arlington

Illyria reimagines Shakespeare's comedy of mixed-signal love in a downtown Manhattan dive bar in the early 1980s, where identity, sex and gender are what you will. But who will fall in love with whom? And what music of love will the divas and DJ play? This fresh slant on a classic shakes up Shakespeare with the driving beats and dingy glamor of the post-disco era. See this Avant Bard production at Gunston Arts Center in Arlington.

DC Metro Theater Arts - Highly Recommended

"...Director Mitchell Hébert takes full advantage of the varied spaces of the playing area. Not a corner or nook goes unused at one time or another (though a few of the spaces are not fully visible from some seats on risers in the corners of the theater), allowing for a quick pace and an uninterrupted flow of scenes. John D. Alexander’s lighting design hits the often rapidly changing marks with precision, as well as providing excellent atmospherics for the club."

"...Among the very proficient cast, several stood out. Ezra Tozian played the love-struck Viola/Cesario with a youthful, determined eagerness to get it right for both Orsino and Olivia and themself that was sweet and bracing. With head half-shaved and half shoulder length, they were surprisingly erotic in their wooing of both, imparting a refreshing sense of springtime into the proceedings."

"...There are a few surprises in the plot for those familiar with Twelfth Night. A highlight of the show involves a more sympathetic treatment of Malvolio (Christopher Henley in a memorable performance), who rises above heartbreak after being deceived into thinking Olivia returned his love. Other supporting stars include the previously mentioned Frank Britton as a charming Feste, Emma Loughran Hébert, whose Maria provides a slinky club presence, and the charismatic Montana Monardes as Sebastian."
