  Hobson's Choice at Writer's Center

Hobson's Choice

Writer's Center
4508 Walsh Street Bethesda

In this Valentines Day-appropriate play, a 1800s rom-com features the old and cranky Mr. Hobson pitted in a battle with his headstrong daughter. Basically, he's trying to get in between her marriage so she'll eternally be a no-cost employee at his boot shop. If you think this sounds the slightest bit nutty, find out how successful the attempt is with Hobson's Choice at the Writer's Center in Bethesda.

"...There is something to be said about how strong the women characters are in a show that is over 100 years old and for that reason alone I understand why Quotidian Theatre Company chose to produce Hobson's Choice. However, if you are going to take on that challenge you need to step up all of your elements. Aside from White, Ellis and an attractive set, this did not happen."

"...It may seem an odd choice at first for Quotidian to revive a century-old comedy of manners in an era of #metoo. Happily, though he's no George Bernard Shaw (that's OK, I'm no Ben Brantley), Harold Brighouse's 1915 comedy Hobson's Choice is, for its time, a savvy study of gender and class politics of the late 1880's. Director David Dubov brings a very contemporary polish, and the cast on the whole bring a colorful, lively and human dimension."
