"...Both actors invest their singing with a joyful melodic confidence. Several of "Girlfriend's" scenes take place, amusingly, in the car Mike parks at the local drive-in movie theater, where he and Will spend much of their summer together. This gives the characters a traditional teenage haunt in which their attraction can germinate and a useful platform - sometimes supplemented by the car radio - for some of the evening's best songs. It's a sweet happenstance that many of the melodies emanating from that car and this musical are grace notes."

The two-man musical now in the ARK Theatre at Signature Theatre in Arlington, Virginia, borrows the songs from Matthew Sweet's 1991 rock album to tell a universal story of falling in love for the first time, but it seems to drag even though the run time is just 90 minutes."

"...Mavrikes has excellent comic timing where called for and his musicals background shinesthrough with the songs. He also captures the misery of Will's unrequited love in a terribly identifiable way. Miller, so handsome that it's like we are seeing an idealized Mike through Will's eyes, nails Mike's halting vulnerability. The two have a great chemistry and a seemingly bottomless well of energy, especially when singing Sweet's music."
