Fabulation

Atlas Performing Arts Center
1333 H Street NE Washington

Two-time Pulitzer Prize and MacArthur Genius Award recipient Lynn Nottage's satirical tale follows successful African-American publicist Undine, as she stumbles down the social ladder after her husband steals her hard-earned fortune. Broke and now pregnant, Undine is forced to return to her childhood home in the projects, where she must face the realities of the life she left behind. Penned with "the firecracker snap of unexpected humor" (The New York Times), Fabulation reveals the folly of outrunning where we come from, and the challenge of returning home.

"...Heightened comic performances prevail through most of Ruffin’s briskly moving production, and the stylization suits the story’s hyperbolic touches. All the actors except for Curry double: Roz White and William T. Newman Jr. are particularly enjoyable as Undine’s guileless parents, and Aakhu TuahNera Freeman ably blends sweetness and flintiness as Undine’s not-so-innocent grandmother."

"...Stylish, successful New York City publicist Undine Barnes Calles is cruising for her comeuppance at the start of Lynn Nottage's spiky comedy Fabulation, or The Re-Education of Undine. And in swift order, the catty, uncaring PR maven gets served all the retribution that's coming to her, and then some, as she loses her man, her money, and her mantle as an upwardly mobile mover in Manhattan's chic social circles."

"...All were strong; if one were a scene stealer it was Kevin E. Thorne II who devises a rhyme he performs at one point and whose every reaction is poised for a laugh or audience response, even if it's only an eyebrow raise."

"...On one hand, Fabulation is a cautionary tale about a female striver who leaned in so far she lost her balance. On another, the Mosaic production is a ceremonial reconnect with family roots. But the wonder of all is that Fabulation is fabulously funny. Just go."
