Every Brilliant Thing at Olney Theatre Center

Every Brilliant Thing

Olney Theatre Center
2001 Olney-Sandy Spring Rd. Olney

From ice cream to kung fu movies to laughing so hard you shoot milk out of your nose, in Every Brilliant Thing, a young boy attempts to ease his mother's depression by creating a list of all the best things in the world. Through adulthood, as the list of things worth living for grows, he learns the deep significance it has on his own life. This interactive one-man show, created by acclaimed playwright Duncan MacMillan (1984) and comedian Jonny Donahoe, has become a worldwide hit for its poignant but funny celebration of the little things that matter in life. You might just be inspired to start your own list after seeing it at the Olney Theatre Center.

"...Working on "Every Brilliant Thing" with Olney Theatre's artistic director, Jason Loewith, has eased Strain's reentry into theater. The one-person cast and minimal props made the rehearsal schedule unusually flexible; Loewith even brought volunteers into rehearsal to play the roles of the audience. The experience has made Strain open to other roles in other productions."

"...The premise is that Strain's character grew up with a mother coping with suicidal depression. As a child, after his mother recovered from her first suicide attempt, he decided that he would cheer her up with a handwritten list of one million brilliant things in life. He put the list aside at several points but always took it up again, and he takes the audience on the journey with him."

DC Metro Theater Arts - Highly Recommended

"...The show is billed as a one-man show, but, in reality, everyone in the audience was a participant, some more than others. Before the show officially began, actor Alexander Strain, a young man who left acting to earn his M.A. in Forensic and Legal Psychology before making his debut at Olney, was climbing into the bleachers set up around the four sides of the black box room."

"...This piece of theatre is valuable and timely. I don't think that there will be another production like "Every Brilliant Thing" this season. Make sure to see it while you can."

"...You won't have the same experience at Every Brilliant Thing as we had on Sunday afternoon. Strain will still unfold the story, standing alone in the center stage, surrounded by four sections of seats. He will say the same words. He will make the same movements. The difference will be what you, the audience, bring to playwright Duncan Macmillan's story."
